What I eat in a day

I know from personal experience that it can be very difficult to make healthy food choices when you have a busy schedule and are running from place to place. But I am an absolute health food enthusiast and a huge fan of clean eating, so I always find a way to choose nutrient-rich options, no matter how busy I am.

In this article, I respond to the questions that I often get asked by clients, friends and family and describe what I eat in a day while keeping up with my busy schedule!

First thing I do in the morning?

Expresso

Espresso! Groggy and bleary-eyed, I crawl into the kitchen to make myself an espresso. I can’t do anything without my first ‘nectar of the Gods’ in the morning. Coffee gets a bad rap but the truth is, like many things, caffeine is good for you up to a point. Many people do not realize that good quality coffee is rich in nutrients and antioxidants.

Research has linked coffee with a lower risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. The caffeine content in coffee can also boost your mood and brain function. Personally, I love to have one before my morning workout as I know it helps my fat cells to be used as an energy source and it also increases my metabolism, which makes me burn more calories throughout my day.

Green Smoothie

Then before leaving my house, I will sip on a Supergreens smoothie to support detoxification and gut health. Making my own means that I can add coconut water (I simply cannot survive without it!), experiment with the latest health foods and supplements that I come across, tweak the flavors, and control the amount of sugar, protein, and anything else that goes in there.

I also love the fact that the green veggies I choose for my smoothies are loaded with chlorophyll, a green pigment that helps oxygenate blood, boost my physical energy and rewire my sleepy neurons for the day ahead. While drinking my smoothie, I always find a few minutes to say a small prayer of gratitude and name the things I am most thankful for. I also use that time to set new goals and intentions. I find that this morning routine helps me to stay focused and positive.

What is my breakfast routine?

My breakfast changes depending on my workout, work schedule and travel that day. Once I leave the gym, I only have 15 minutes to shower and eat before welcoming my first client so I need an easy “go-to” like chia seed pudding, almond butter and blueberries. I can prepare it the night before and throw it in my bag if I am in a rush.

How about lunch?

I love eating lunch at my desk. It is one of my favourite rituals while I catch up on the news and answer a few personal messages before diving back into my work. When making my food choices, I also always ensure that I am getting enough veggies and nine times out of ten, I cook my own meals rather than eat out; even if that means packing my own lunch. That way, I know what goes in my food. And when it comes to ingredient choices, most of what I choose is based on what seasonal foods I can find at my local farmers’ market. I love to get to know the people responsible for growing the food that I will have on my plate and to taste-test before I buy! Today, I am eating an immune boosting soup packed with all the nutrients that my body needs to keep those dreaded germs at bay and some plant-based protein patties.

And dinner?

Dinner is my favourite meal of the day. It is a time when I get the chance to relax and chat with my family after a crazy day running around. I eat fish twice a week, and it is usually at dinner… Lately, I’ve been craving Thai salmon patties with roasted veggies and sweet potatoes made with herbs, spices, apple cider vinegar and olive oil. And because life simply wouldn’t be the same without avocados, I like to slice half of one on top for good measure.

Before bed, I chug a cup of magnesium and potassium rich cacao, banana, cinnamon and almond milk drink to support a deep, restorative sleep. Then it is lights out!
